Is a group plan right for your business?
Group coverage isn't just for big companies. Small teams have real options.
Built for small teams
I typically work with businesses with fewer than 50 employees. Owners can usually be covered too.
Hire and keep good people
Health benefits are one of the first things candidates ask about. A solid plan helps you compete with bigger employers.
Possible tax advantages
Employer contributions toward employee premiums are generally a deductible business expense. Check the details with your tax advisor.

We decide your contribution, then I help your employees enroll and answer their questions.
Review every renewal
Each year I review your renewal and shop alternatives if the price jumps.
Options we can look at
- Group health coverage for your team, including traditional small group health plans
- Level-funded plans: a group health option where the business pays a set monthly amount and may get money back if claims run lower than expected
- Choice plans: CHOICE Arrangements (formerly ICHRA) and QSEHRAs. See how they work
Have these ready
- An employee list with dates of birth, home ZIP codes and who would enroll (spouse, children)
- Your current plan summary and renewal notice, if you have one
- Basic business details (business name, FEIN, a recent payroll report)
Choice plans: give your team a budget instead of one plan
With a choice plan, the business sets a monthly allowance, each employee picks their own individual health plan (for example, on the Marketplace), and the business reimburses them tax-free. I offer two types: CHOICE Arrangements and QSEHRAs.
Traditional group plan
- The business picks one or a few plans for everyone
- The business pays a share of each employee's premium directly to the insurance company
- Everyone shares the same network and benefits
CHOICE Arrangement formerly called an individual coverage HRA (ICHRA)
- Available to businesses of any size
- The business sets a monthly allowance, which can vary by group of employees, age and family size within federal rules
- Each employee picks their own individual plan, on or off the Marketplace, and is reimbursed tax-free
- Can't be offered alongside a group plan to the same group of employees
QSEHRA Qualified Small Employer HRA
- For businesses with fewer than 50 full-time employees that don't offer a group health plan
- Offered on the same terms to all full-time employees
- The business sets an allowance up to a yearly maximum set by the IRS
- Employees with qualifying coverage are reimbursed tax-free
How I help the business
- Compare a choice plan with a traditional group plan for your team
- Help you choose an allowance and which employees are eligible
- Help set up the arrangement, the required employee notices and the reimbursement process, often with a third-party administrator
How I help each employee
- Explain how the allowance works with their own plan
- Help them compare individual plans that fit their doctors, prescriptions and budget
- Help them enroll, and check how the allowance affects any Marketplace savings they might qualify for

Small business questions, answered
How many employees do I need for a group plan?
I typically work with businesses with fewer than 50 employees. The minimum number of employees can vary, so I'll check what fits your team.
How much does the business have to pay?
Insurance companies usually require the employer to pay a minimum share of the employee's premium and a minimum number of eligible employees to enroll. I'll explain the rules before you decide.
When can we start a group plan?
Small group coverage can usually start on the first of any month, so you don't have to wait for an open enrollment season.
Can I give employees money for their own health plan instead of a group plan?
Yes. With a CHOICE Arrangement (formerly called an ICHRA) or, for businesses with fewer than 50 full-time employees and no group plan, a QSEHRA, you set a monthly allowance, each employee picks their own individual plan, and you reimburse them tax-free. I'll help you set it up and help each employee choose a plan.
